Q. Is there hardware based fail-open in transparent mode?
A. No, in order to have a fail-safe transparent mode deployment you may use a single arm deployment where policy-routing directs SMTP traffic to the FortiMail. The gateway address of the policy-route would be the FortiMail address, when this address in unreachable the policy-route should fail allowing traffic to flow on unfiltered path.
Q. Is it possible to work in both modes, transparent and gateway?
A. No, the device operates in one mode only.
Q. Is it now possible to define wildcards? [for domain names] I know that it wasn’t the last releases? For example *.training.lab.
A. No, wildcards cannot be used in protected mail domain names.
Q. What happens if configured ldap servers are down [Recipient Verification]?
A. If the LDAP server is down a ‘451 retry later’ error is sent to sending MTA. If the entry is in the cache – and the LDAP server is down – the recipient verification will work ok.
Q. What’s "large" [file size]
A. The default max message size is 10MB. The session-profile setting ‘SMTP limits > Cap Message Size at’ can override this value and allows an entry from 1MB to 200MB.
Q. If I'm blocking incoming mails for a specific mail address, will the sender get an NDR?
A. The sending MTA who receives the 550 message must send the DSN to the sender.
Q. Can you tailor the specific reject code in the Access Control Rules?
A. No, with a reject action the sender will get a 550 Access Denied message. Alternatively an IP Policy can be used instead which can generate a 551 Connection Not Allowed or a 450 Please Try Again Later.
Q. Can user preferences be used in gateway mode or only in server mode?
A. User preferences apply equally to gateway and transparent mode, they relate to webmail quarantine and black/white lists.

Q. Why is the users menu tab displayed in gateway mode?
A. User preferences for Webmail quarantine access and black/white lists can be set.
Q. Is there a way to send all Spam to the System Quarentine and is there a policy that does that?
A. For outgoing yes, for incoming this is not possible. If the aim is to have one user managing all the quarantine files this could be achieved by secondary addresses.
Q. If there are no licenses for FortiGuard anymore, all mails will be blocked?
A. No, only the FortiGuard filters are affected.
Q. If I am a trusted user, and I send a mail which has a virus attached, will my e-mail be considered spam?
A. No, it will be detected as an AV event. However repeated offences will cause sender reputation – if enabled – will take effect thereby considering the sender to be a Spammer.
Q. Are databases of AS/AV subsystems are the same for FortiMail and Fortigate devices..?
A. No, there are differences based on the fact that FortiGate is real-time and FortiMail is store-and-forward.
Q. If a trusted user sends a virus in the e-mail, can we configure the FM to mark him as a spammer?
A. For a single event no, but for repeated offences Sender Reputation would rate-limit, temp-fail, or block the user.
Q. Can you determine whether a single user has multiple addresses
using LDAP and thus give them a single quarantine account?

A. Yes, you can query LDAP for aliases.
Q. Can the Fortimail delay it's greeting to catch out non-RFC compliant senders (such as viruses) that start talking without waiting for the greeting?
A. If the MUA is not implementing proper SMTP stack, chances are good that it will get caught by greylisting method anyway.
